Family Sponsorship
Canadian citizens or permanent residents are able to sponsor their family members so they can come live , work or study here in Canada. This is done in two stages ; first the Canadian citizen or permanent resident applies to sponsor their family member and then the family member applies for permanent residence.
Family members that are eligible to be sponsored under this program are :
spouse or common-law partner
Dependent child ( 22 years or younger and not married or in a common- law relationship)
Relatives or orphaned child; in some cases.
Adopted child
Parents and grandparents.
Am I eligible to sponsor a family member ?
In order to sponsor a family member you need to :
Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Be at least 18 years old
Sign an undertaking ; which is a promise to financially support your family member . The duration of the undertaking is anywhere from 3-10 years.
Not be on social assistance
Not be in default of any undertakings
Have not been sponsored themselves in the past 5 years
Not be in jail , prison or a penitentiary
Show proof of income
Sponsoring a relative or orphaned child :
You can sponsor an orphaned niece or nephew, sister, brother, grandchild or another relative . To sponsor your niece, nephew, sister, brother or grandchild, they HAVE to meet ALL the following requirements:
They are related to you by blood
They are under 18 years old
Both their parents passed away
They are not married or in a common-law relationship
You can sponsor ONE (1) relative of any age if you meet ALL the following criteria :
You are related to them by blood
You have no living relative you can sponsor ( no family members)
You have no relatives who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or registered Indians.
Sponsoring your parents or grandparents:
In order to sponsor your parents or grandparents, you need to meet all the eligibility criteria above as well as show proof of income for the last 3 tax years . You must meet a certain income requirement plus 30% based on your family size to be eligible. The undertaking for this category is 20 years . Your spouse or common-law partner can co-sign the agreement with you.
This program is based on random selections from the government, and once the quota is filled, the program will be closed for the year.
