What is a study permit?

A study permit is an official document issued by the Government of Canada that allows international students to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). It is a mandatory requirement for most foreign nationals who wish to pursue education in Canada for programs longer than six months. A study permit comes with specific conditions, including maintaining enrollment, making progress in your studies, and complying with the terms of your visa. In some cases, students may also be eligible to work on or off-campus while studying.

Eligibility for a study permit :

In order to be eligible for a study permit you must meet the following conditions :

  • DLI Enrollment : you must be enrolled at a Canadian Designated Learning institution ( DLI)

  • Financial requirement : You must prove that you have enough money to cover your :

    • tuition fees

    • living expenses for you and your family members ( if any are coming with u)

    • return transportation

  • Intent : you intend to return after you complete your studies.

How do I obtain a study permit?

  • Your first step in obtaining a study permit is securing a letter of acceptance in a Canadian educational program from a DLI. DLIs usually require proof of English proficiency from foreign nationals. Some DLIs also request a tuition fee deposit after being accepted.

  • A provincial attestation letter (PAL) or territorial attestation letter ( TAL)

  • The application: a complete application with all requested documents must be submitted to immigration authorities.

Starting November 8, 2024, if you want to change your post-secondary school, you need to get a new study permit by applying to extend your current one.

As of November 8, 2024, students are allowed to work off campus up to 24 hours per week without a work permit while meeting certain criteria

Post Graduate Work Permit :

What is a PGWP?

A PGWP is a work permit issued to foreign nationals who have graduated from a DLI that was 8 months in length or more. This open work permit allows the foreign national to work in Canada in any job or occupation.

How long is it?

A PGWP is issued for the duration of the program studied in Canada, for a maximum of 3 years. Starting February 15, 2024, students who graduate from master’s degree programs of less than 2 years (8 months minimum) may be eligible for a 3-year PGWP

Applicants must apply for this permit within 180 days of graduating and make sure they meet all the requirements for applying . Gaining at least one year of Canadian work experience under this permit will pave the way for applicants to potentially apply for permanent residency through the Express Entry system.
